join the household through marriage (Veli Ceremony of Kerala Brahmins) hold prime
importance in the family. The Kerala Brahmin pre-wedding rituals of the
Mannarasala Family include Nedyam, the bridal bath ceremony, a ritual feast, a
special festive gathering consisting of celebrations like Thiruvathirakali (Kerala
traditional group dance), and then one of the most important ceremonies, which is the
‘Ayirathiri Eru Ceremony’. The Nedyam Ritual will be performed before the
Ayinoonu Ceremony, for Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Guru, Lord Maha Vishnu and
Lord Ganesha. The Ayirathiri Eru ceremony unites all married women in the family to
sing songs and fold wicks in a happy spirit. The wicks folded during this ceremony
will be lit on the wedding day to welcome the groom.
